• Submit any accommodations paperwork with the registration, not after. Accommodations requests take time to process and cannot be arranged at the last minute.

For Students at Charter, Private, Parochial, or Homeschool Settings

• Register directly through the MySchools portal at myschools.nyc.
• Indicate your school preference order when you register. You can update the order later, but getting it right the first time saves a step.
• If you cannot test on a Saturday or Sunday, flag that during registration. It affects which weekend date you get assigned.

Who Is Eligible

• Current 8th graders can register for 9th-grade entry to any of the nine specialized high schools.
• Current 9th graders can register for 10th-grade entry, but only to three schools that accept 10th graders: Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech.
• All NYC residents are eligible, including students at public, charter, private, parochial, and homeschool settings.

When the Weekend Test Dates Will Be Announced

The DOE has confirmed the school day date (November 18, 2026) but has not yet published the weekend test dates for students at charter, private, parochial, or homeschool settings. The DOE has said those dates will be announced "later this fall."

For weekend test-takers, the relevant anchor is still October 30, 2026. The registration deadline is the same regardless of which test date your student is assigned. What to Do Between October 30 and November 18

• Take one final timed, full-length practice exam roughly one week before November 18, then taper.
• Review every missed question and tag it by subtopic. Patterns across sessions tell you exactly where you are still bleeding points.
• Practice the digital question types until they feel routine. The 2026 SHSAT is computer-adaptive and uses forward-only navigation in most sections, so first-pass accuracy matters more than ever.

Common Registration Mistakes

Assuming the school handled it. Some schools send home registration packets. Some do not. Some counselors register every student by default. Some require a signed parent consent. Do not assume. Ask.

Waiting until the final week to register. Portal traffic peaks in the days before the deadline. A technical issue on October 29 is unrecoverable. Register in the first week of the window if you can.

Forgetting to rank schools during registration. When you register, you will rank all eight testing schools in order of preference.
