SHSAT 2026 Test Day Officially Announced: November 18, 2026 (DOE Confirms)

The wait is over. NYC Public Schools has officially announced the SHSAT School Day for Wednesday, November 18, 2026, for all NYC public school students in middle schools that end in eighth grade. The date is published on the DOE Specialized High Schools page as of this update.

If your child is taking the SHSAT this fall, you now have a hard date on the calendar. The exam is roughly 11 weeks away from the day this post was published, and the registration window opens in just over a month. The rest of this page is built around what you should do with that information.

The Official 2026 SHSAT Dates at a Glance

The November 18 date is fixed for students at NYC public schools that end in eighth grade. For students at charter, private, parochial, or homeschool settings, the weekend dates have not been published yet. The DOE says those will be announced later this fall.

Why November 18 Matters

This is the only test date that matters for the majority of NYC families: roughly 29,000 students sit for the SHSAT each year, and the vast majority of them are at NYC public middle schools that end in grade 8. For those students, November 18 is the day.

A few things this date does not change, and a few things it does:

What it does not change: The SHSAT is still the sole criterion for admissions to the eight testing specialized high schools. Cutoffs will still be set after the test based on that year's applicant pool, not announced in advance. The exam is still computer-adaptive and now uses forward-only navigation in most sections, meaning students cannot skip ahead and return to earlier questions.

What it does change: You can now stop planning for "mid-to-late November" and start planning for one specific day. That means every practice exam, every timed section, every study block should be sequenced toward a Wednesday in mid-November, not a vague window.

Registration: What Has Been Confirmed and What Has Not

Confirmed: Registration opens Tuesday, October 6, 2026, and closes Friday, October 30, 2026. The window is roughly four and a half weeks. Registration goes through your child's school counselor or the MySchools portal.

Not yet announced: Weekend site assignments, the Digital Readiness Activity date, and test ticket distribution timing. The DOE has committed to publishing these "later this fall." Until then, plan around the school day date if your child attends a NYC public middle school ending in eighth grade, and around the registration deadline regardless of where your child attends school.

One rule that does not change: No late registration. If your child is not registered by Friday, October 30, 2026, they cannot take the SHSAT for this cycle. There is no appeal and no waiting list.

What It Took Last Cycle: The Most Recent Cutoff Scores

The DOE publishes the lowest qualifying SHSAT score from each cycle once offers are released. The most recent published set is the Fall 2025 administration, used for Fall 2026 admission.

10th grade seats are far more limited and cutoffs are correspondingly higher. Three schools accept 10th graders: Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech.

Important: These are last cycle's numbers. Cutoffs move every year based on who applies and how they score. Use these as a planning anchor, not a target you can lock in.

What's New for the 2026 SHSAT Format

Two format changes matter for this cycle:

1. Forward-only navigation in most sections. Starting Fall 2026, students cannot go back and change answers once they have moved past a question in most sections of the exam. First-pass accuracy matters more than it ever has. The pacing strategy is to answer carefully on the first try rather than speed through and try to come back.

2. Computer-adaptive format continues. The SHSAT has been computer-adaptive since Fall 2024. Question difficulty adjusts as your student answers, so getting early questions right leads to harder (and more heavily weighted) later questions. Building Your 11-Week Prep Plan Around November 18

With a fixed date, every prep block has a place on the calendar. Here is a working framework built backward from test day.

Weeks 1–4 (Now through early October): Foundation

This is the heaviest prep window. Use it to identify weak topics and build base competency.

• Take a full-length diagnostic practice test to establish a baseline score and break down performance by subtopic
• Build a weekly study schedule you can sustain through November
• Focus on the section that is bleeding the most points. Most students have a clear ELA-or-Math split, and the ELA vs Math analysis can help you decide where to weight time

Week 5 (October 6–13): Register Immediately

When registration opens on October 6, do not wait.

• Confirm registration through your child's school counselor or MySchools
• Rank all eight testing schools in true preference order
• Submit any accommodations paperwork. Requests take time to process and cannot be arranged at the last minute
• Verify the registration actually went through. Do not assume

Weeks 6–8 (Mid-October through early November): Sharpen

• Take a timed, full-length practice exam under real conditions. Aim for one per week in this window
• Review every missed question and tag it by subtopic. Use Fix Your Misses so you can see patterns across sessions
• Practice the digital question types until they feel routine
• Get comfortable with the forward-only pacing strategy. The first attempt should be the right attempt

Weeks 9–10 (Early-to-mid November): Taper

• Take one final timed full-length practice roughly a week before test day, then taper
• Confirm test site (your student's home school for school day, assigned central site for weekend), and plan the route including a backup
• Prepare materials the night before. Do not leave it to test day morning

Test Day: Wednesday, November 18, 2026

• Arrive with time to spare. Rushing is the enemy of first-pass accuracy
• Read each question fully before answering. With forward-only navigation, you cannot afford to re-read after committing
• Do not leave any question blank. There is no penalty for wrong answers
• For school day testing, the test happens during the regular school day at the home school. For weekend testing, follow the admission ticket directions

Common Mistakes to Avoid Now That You Have a Date

Assuming the weekend dates will match the school day date. Charter, private, parochial, and homeschool students test on weekends at central sites, on dates the DOE has not yet announced. Plan around the registration deadline (October 30) instead of around a specific test date if your student tests on a weekend.

Starting serious prep after registration opens. Registration opens about seven weeks before test day. Most students who earn a competitive score started months earlier. The November 18 date is when the test happens, not when prep starts.

Treating the cutoff scores as a target. Last cycle's scores are a guide, not a guarantee. Aim higher than the cutoff you need.

Ranking schools strategically instead of honestly. The matching algorithm gives you your highest-ranked school where your score clears the cutoff. Ranking a school you want less ahead of one you want more can only hurt you.

Ignoring the forward-only navigation rule. Without the ability to return to earlier questions, every first answer is your final answer. Practice that way.

What to Do Today

Three actions, in order of urgency:

1. Block November 18, 2026 on your family calendar as the test day for any 8th grader attending a NYC public school ending in grade 8
2. Set a reminder for Tuesday, October 6, 2026 so you register in the first week of the window, not the last
3. Take a diagnostic or a full-length practice this week if your student has not yet established a baseline score

You now have the date. The only remaining question is whether you will be ready when it arrives.
