NYC's first digital-native SHSAT prep platform
Built from the ground up for the way the SHSAT is now administered: on a screen, with interactive question types that do not exist in any printed textbook.
Why we built SHS Prep
Every year, roughly 26,000 NYC middle schoolers sit for the SHSAT. Fewer than 4,100 receive offers. The families who can afford $3,000 to $12,000 in-person tutoring centers have a built-in advantage, not because the tutoring is better, but because they get more hours of structured practice with realistic materials.
In 2025, the SHSAT went fully digital on the TestNav platform. The test now includes 11 interactive question types (matrix sort, drag-to-table, hot text, inline dropdowns, and more) that do not appear in any published textbook. The printed workbooks and in-person centers that dominate SHSAT prep are now teaching to a test format that no longer exists.
SHS Prep was built to close both gaps: cost and format. The platform gives every NYC family access to 3,100 plus practice questions, 10 full-length mock exams, and the only practice environment that mirrors how the real test looks and feels, at a price ($30 per month) that is 100x cheaper than the average tutoring center.
By the numbers
How it works
- 1
Take a baseline mock exam
Start with one of the 10 full-length practice tests to establish a starting score and see which sections need the most attention.
- 2
Drill your weak subtopics
Use the analytics breakdown to identify your lowest-performing subtopics, then work through the dedicated question sets and lessons for each one.
- 3
Practice the digital-only formats
Spend time in the Digital-Only Question Practice section so the 11 interactive question types are routine before test day.
- 4
Retest and repeat
Take another mock exam every two to four weeks. The analytics will show exactly how each subtopic has improved and where to focus next.
Built by educators and engineers in New York
SHS Prep is designed in New York City by a team that has analyzed every official DOE practice test, dissected the TestNav interface, and built a question bank using professional-grade reference sources including ArgoPrep, Kaplan, and the NYC DOE SHSAT Handbook.
