The enhanced ACT Composite is the rounded average of the English, Math, and Reading section scale scores. Science and Writing are not included. Add the three required scores, divide by three, and round the result to the nearest whole number.
That is the complete arithmetic, but applying it correctly requires the right inputs. Use section scores on the ACT’s 1–36 scale, not raw correct-answer counts, percentages, percentile ranks, or a Writing score. ACT Composite definition
A worked example
Suppose your section scores are:

The enhanced Composite is (25 + 28 + 29) ÷ 3 = 82 ÷ 3 = 27.33, which rounds to 27.
Science does not enter that calculation. Its score remains a separate result when reported. Do not add it to the total and divide by four.
Now change English from 25 to 26 while leaving Math and Reading unchanged. The new sum is 83, and 83 ÷ 3 = 27.67. The rounded Composite becomes 28.
That example illustrates a rounding boundary. It does not imply that every one-point section increase produces a one-point Composite increase.
Understand the rounding pattern
Because the three section scores are whole numbers, their average ends in a whole number, one-third, or two-thirds. In ordinary decimal notation, those values appear as .00, about .33, or about .67.

You never need to round each section first: it is already a scale score. Do not round an intermediate raw percentage and then substitute it for a section score.
For same-form practice calculations, the official scoring instructions use nearest-whole-number rounding, with a half rounded upward. Raw answers come before scale scores
Suppose you count 32 correct English answers, 31 correct Math answers, and 24 correct Reading answers. Averaging those counts would give 29, but that is not an ACT Composite.
First, identify the exact form. Then determine whether the counts include unscored questions. Finally, use the form’s conversion guide to obtain the section scale scores.

An original SHSPrep practice set, a classroom quiz, or another company’s exercise does not automatically share an official form’s conversion. Use those materials to learn skills, not to manufacture an officially equated Composite.
What if a section is blank?
A missing English, Math, or Reading score means you do not have the three inputs needed for the enhanced Composite. Do not average the remaining two and call that result a Composite.
A blank input also differs from an attempted section with zero correct answers. The former means the result is unavailable; the latter is a raw count that the selected form’s guide can convert.
This distinction is useful when studying one section at a time. You can report “Math practice result” without inventing a complete-test number. A partial result is not less useful when it is labelled accurately.
Science and STEM belong in a separate calculation
Science can contribute to a STEM score with Math. For example, Math 28 and Science 24 give a STEM average of 26. That does not change the earlier Composite of 27.
A student can therefore have a higher STEM score than Composite, or the reverse. Neither relationship is an error. The numbers combine different skills.
Do not use a separate Science result from another practice day to label a same-administration STEM score. For official reporting across attempts, use ACT’s actual report rather than constructing fields that may follow different reporting rules.
Use section profiles to choose study work
The Composite summarizes three scores, but it can hide very different preparation needs.

All three have the same average. Student A may need broad improvements. Student B has a pronounced Math gap. Student C may benefit from examining both English and Reading, while maintaining Math.
The table is hypothetical. It is a planning illustration, not a prediction of which student will improve fastest.
For each section, review the mistakes beneath the score. A low score caused by unfamiliar content is different from one caused by rushing or answer-entry errors. The most useful next session addresses a specific repeated problem.
Do not turn rounding into a score guarantee
Knowing that a particular sum crosses a Composite boundary can help you understand a report. It cannot tell you exactly how many additional raw questions will cross that boundary on a future form.
Raw-to-scale conversions vary by form, and a student’s performance can vary across days. Avoid plans such as “I only need two more questions, so I can ignore every other topic.”
A better goal is observable: solve a recurring equation type accurately, support Reading inferences with evidence, or identify sentence boundaries consistently. Those skills matter even when a particular practice conversion leaves the rounded Composite unchanged.
Keep historical reports intact
The enhanced Composite change did not retroactively rewrite every old single-test score. ACT says scores from tests before the new Composite rollout retain their original results. If you want to compare section profiles across dates, keep the original test dates and reported values visible. Label any calculation you perform yourself as a calculation, not a replacement official report.
Superscoring is another distinct process. It may combine section scores from multiple administrations under ACT’s current rules, while a single-test Composite describes one administration.
A five-step check before sharing a number
Confirm that you have three section scale scores, that they belong to the result you mean to report, that you used English/Math/Reading, that the arithmetic and rounding are correct, and that you have labelled practice versus official results clearly.
