An ACT raw score is a count of correct scored answers. A section scale score is the 1–36 result obtained from the conversion table for that particular form. There is no single raw-to-scale chart that correctly converts every ACT practice test.
Before calculating, identify the exact test and confirm what you counted. A total across all delivered questions can include unscored items. Treating that total as a scored-only raw count can inflate the result.
The three pieces of information you need
Write these details before opening a calculator:
- Form identity: the official test name or code.
- Section: English, Math, Reading, or Science.
- Counting method: scored questions only, or all delivered questions.
Keep the matching answer key and conversion table together. A downloaded test booklet from one form and a scoring PDF from another are not a usable pair, even if their filenames look similar.
When a score seems surprising, verify these three inputs before deciding the chart is wrong.
Why forms use different tables
A section scale is intended to support interpretation across test forms. Raw counts alone do not accomplish that, because forms can differ in the difficulty of their questions.
The practical consequence is visible in the official enhanced practice materials. In the two forms supported by our calculator, 35 scored English answers convert to 29 on Test 1 and 30 on Test 2. Do not average the two charts or choose whichever produces the higher number. Use the chart belonging to the form you actually completed.
Delivered questions and scored questions
The calculator supports the named Enhanced ACT Practice Tests 1 and 2. On those selected official forms, the section counts are:

Use the form’s key to identify the unscored positions. Their locations differ between the two forms. This table should not be used to infer which questions are unscored on another practice test or a live administration. Test 1 scoring key, Test 2 scoring key
In a real test, do not try to identify and skip supposed unscored questions. They are part of the delivered work. The published practice key lets you score a released form afterward; it is not a live-test guessing strategy.
Exact conversion: scored questions only
Suppose you completed Test 1 and used its official key to exclude the identified unscored English questions. You count 35 correct scored answers.
The conversion is direct: find raw 35 in Test 1’s English table and read scale score 29. You do not divide 35 by 40 and multiply by 36. That proportional calculation is not the published conversion.
This process can be exact for the named practice form while still not predicting your next official result. A future test is another performance, under its own conditions and form.
When all-question counts produce a range
Now suppose you know only that you answered 40 of Test 1’s 50 delivered English questions correctly. You did not record which correct answers were unscored.
There are ten unscored questions. At one extreme, all ten of those were among your correct answers, leaving 30 scored answers correct. At the other extreme, none of your correct answers were unscored, leaving 40 scored answers correct.
Your possible scored count is therefore 30–40. On this selected form, the corresponding section-score bounds are 24–36.
The range is not a confidence interval. It does not mean every score within it is equally likely, and it does not identify your most likely result. It describes what your incomplete information allows.
Derive the bounds carefully
For any supported section, the possible scored count begins at the larger of zero and “total correct minus unscored questions.” It ends at the smaller of total correct and the section’s scored-question count.
Consider a section with 41 scored questions and four unscored questions:

These are arithmetic examples based on that section’s counts. Notice why the upper bound needs a cap: a section cannot contain 43 correct scored answers when only 41 questions are scored.
The calculator evaluates every eligible raw count in the selected table and returns the lowest and highest resulting scale values. It does not interpolate between forms or guess how well you performed on the unscored items.
Percent correct is useful for a different purpose
A percentage can help you compare accuracy within a clearly defined practice set. It is not automatically an ACT section score.
If you answer 18 of 24 original practice questions correctly, 75% is a valid accuracy calculation. Calling that result a 27 because 75% of 36 is 27 is not a valid ACT conversion.
Use original skill sets to identify patterns: which question types you miss, whether a correction transfers to fresh problems, and whether timing changes your accuracy. Reserve official-form scale conversions for the matching official materials.
Blank and zero are not interchangeable
Leaving a section blank in a calculator should mean that you have not supplied its result. It should not be treated as zero correct.
If you attempted a section and got zero scored answers right, the selected form has a raw-zero entry. If you did not attempt or score that section, there is no input to convert.
This matters for combined results. The enhanced Composite needs English, Math, and Reading section scores. A tool should not fill in a missing section merely to display a complete-looking number.
A scoring worksheet that prevents mix-ups
Keep one row per attempt:

If you later correct a counting mistake, note the correction rather than replacing the earlier record without explanation. A transparent practice log is more useful than a perfect-looking score history.
