ACT College Readiness Benchmarks are subject-specific indicators associated with performance in introductory college courses. They are useful for planning academic support and coursework. They are not college admission cutoffs, guarantees of a grade, or a single score that labels a student ready for every aspect of college.
Read the section scores before drawing a conclusion from the Composite. A strong average can coexist with a specific area that needs attention. The productive question is what the report suggests you should investigate and practice next.
The current ACT benchmark scores
As reviewed on September 6, 2026, ACT publishes these benchmarks:

ACT links the thresholds to a 50% probability of a B or better and approximately a 75–80% probability of a C or better in the corresponding credit-bearing courses. ELA is reported only when Writing is taken. These figures and their definitions come from ACT's current benchmark reference.
The table contains different indicators for different areas. Do not add the values, average the benchmark numbers, or turn them into an unofficial Composite requirement.
What the probability language means
A probability describes an association across students represented by the underlying research. It does not tell one student exactly what grade they will receive in a particular course taught at a particular college.
Consider the phrase “50% probability of a B or better.” It does not mean the student understands exactly half of the course material. It also does not mean that someone below the threshold has no chance of doing well.
The outcome of a college course also reflects the work a student does after taking the ACT. Attendance, preparation for class, help-seeking, study habits, and the course itself will matter to that experience. A readiness indicator gives a reason to prepare thoughtfully; it does not replace participation in the course.
When discussing a report, use language such as “This result suggests that we should look more closely at algebra readiness.” Avoid “This score proves you cannot handle college Math.” The second claim reaches far beyond what one testing result can establish.
Read the section profile before the Composite
Here is an original example using hypothetical enhanced ACT section scores:

The enhanced Composite is (24 + 20 + 25) ÷ 3 = 23. That average does not erase the Math result. It also supplies no missing Science information.
ACT's enhanced-test guidance identifies English, Math, and Reading as the subjects used in the new Composite. Science is reported separately when included; a school program may determine whether its students take it.
A counselor might use this profile to discuss the student's Math coursework and inspect recent work. The student could have a recurring algebra gap, difficulty translating word problems, or a pacing issue. Those possibilities require different responses, so the score alone is only the beginning of the conversation.
Keep STEM and Science distinct
A STEM result combines information from Math and Science; it is not another name for the Science section score. Read the labels on the actual report rather than copying a number into whichever benchmark column seems relevant.
If Science was not taken, do not assign a zero or invent a Science estimate from the Composite. Absence of that result means the particular indicator is unavailable. It does not establish low Science achievement.
Similarly, taking Science does not automatically make every college require it, and skipping it does not establish that every college will ignore the omission. Application requirements belong to the institution. Readiness interpretation and admissions compliance are separate tasks.
For a student interested in a quantitative field, the helpful conversation includes current Math and science coursework, relevant assignments, the next planned courses, and available academic support. A benchmark can contribute to that discussion without deciding a major on the student's behalf.
Benchmarks, percentiles, and college ranges answer different questions
These three kinds of numbers often appear near each other, but they describe different comparisons.

A student can meet a readiness benchmark and still have a score below a selective college's published range. Another student may need academic support in a particular subject while being a suitable applicant to colleges with different academic programs and admission practices.
Use the number that matches the decision. If you are choosing a Math review topic, examine skills and work. If you are deciding whether to submit a score, examine the college's current policy. Do not ask a benchmark to do both jobs.
Turn a below-benchmark result into a small action plan
Start with a concrete question about the student's work. “What makes multi-step equations difficult?” gives you more direction than “How do we raise Math?”
An original four-week support plan could look like this:
- Week one: examine recent classwork and a few relevant practice problems; identify one repeated misunderstanding.
- Week two: learn or revisit the concept with a teacher, explanation, or worked examples.
- Week three: apply it in unfamiliar contexts without looking at the solution first.
- Week four: review whether the student can explain and use the idea, then choose the next priority.
This is a suggested learning process, not a promise of a benchmark increase in four weeks.
A retest may eventually provide another data point, but improvement in the underlying work is worth noticing before the next score arrives. Being able to explain why an equation represents a situation is a concrete achievement even when no new official score exists yet.
Keep working after meeting a benchmark
Meeting a threshold is a reason to recognize progress, not a reason to stop learning the subject. Continue taking appropriate courses, practicing writing, and reading material that requires sustained attention.
Look for weaknesses hidden by an otherwise strong result. A student may solve equations efficiently but struggle to interpret data, or answer many Reading questions correctly while relying on guesses in a particular passage type.
Ask teachers what will be expected in the next course. That conversation can lead to a useful summer review or a study habit to develop now. The goal is to prepare for actual academic work, not merely to preserve a label on a score report.
Use practice estimates carefully in counseling conversations
An official result, a predicted range on another assessment, and a practice calculation are different kinds of evidence. Identify which one you are discussing before comparing it with a benchmark.
The ACT score calculator uses specified official enhanced practice forms. When a student enters totals across all delivered questions without identifying the unscored items, it can show a possible range. If a benchmark falls inside that range, the result does not establish which side an official score would fall on.
Even a precise practice conversion is not an official administration. Record the form, date, timing, and conditions so that a future conversation can interpret the result honestly.
