Every student preparing for the SHSAT eventually asks the same question: which math topics should I worry about most?
We looked at accuracy patterns across thousands of practice answers on our platform, and the results are consistent: a handful of topics account for a disproportionate share of missed questions. Here they are, ranked from hardest to merely tricky, with a free practice page for each so you can test yourself right now.
One note before the list: "hard" on the SHSAT rarely means the underlying math is advanced. The exam tests material through 7th grade. What makes a topic hard is usually one of three things: multi-step setups, figures that must be read precisely, or wording designed to punish skimming.
1. Coordinate Geometry
Slope, intercepts, and equations of lines sound simple until they appear as a graph you have to read backward. Students reliably flip the sign of a negative slope, invert rise over run, or read an intercept one gridline off. On the 2026 computer-based exam, coordinate grids render on screen, so practicing on paper alone leaves you unprepared for how they actually look.

2. Word Problems (Algebraic Applications)
Translating two sentences of English into one correct equation is the single most-tested skill on SHSAT math, and the most commonly fumbled. The classic trap: assigning the variable to the wrong quantity, then solving a perfectly correct equation to a perfectly wrong answer.

3. Composite Figures
An L-shaped region, a rectangle with a semicircle attached: these questions bundle two or three area formulas into one figure and dare you to forget a piece. The perimeter versions are sneakier than the area versions, because cut-out corners do not reduce the perimeter the way students expect.

4. Probability
Simple probability is friendly. Compound probability is where scores go to die: "at least one," "without replacement," and spinner problems with unequal outcomes all punish the student who memorized one formula. The SHSAT loves probability questions built on figures, like spinners and number cubes, where miscounting outcomes is fatal.

5. Angles and Parallel Lines
Transversal problems are a gift once you know the three relationships (corresponding, alternate interior, co-interior), and a minefield if you guess visually. The exam explicitly warns that figures are not drawn to scale; eyeballing an angle that "looks like" 60 degrees is the most efficient way to lose a point you knew how to earn.

6. Data Interpretation
Box plots, scatter plots, bar charts, and circle graphs. The math is arithmetic; the difficulty is precision reading. The most-missed variant in our data: box plot questions that ask for the range but reward students who compute the interquartile range instead.

7. Inequalities
Solving inequalities is equation-solving with one extra rule, and that one rule (flip the sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative) accounts for nearly all the misses. Number-line graph questions add a second failure mode: confusing open and closed circles.
