Preparing for the SHSAT may have taught you how to work through a difficult passage, translate a word problem, or keep going when a question is unfamiliar. Those habits can help with ACT preparation. They do not make the ACT a longer version of the same exam.
The ACT serves a different stage of school and uses its own content, sections, tools, and scoring. Begin by identifying what transfers, then learn the parts that require a new approach.
Keep Your SHSAT Experience in Its Year
A student's SHSAT experience depends on when they took it. NYC Public Schools describes a computer-adaptive SHSAT beginning in fall 2026, with navigation rules that differ from older versions. Advice based on a paper administration should not be assumed to describe the current test. NYC Public Schools SHSAT guidance
That matters when you bring old habits to the ACT. You may remember managing a long overall time allowance, choosing a section order, or working within a particular digital navigation system. Learn the ACT's rules directly instead of assuming that familiar behavior is permitted.
You also do not need to update your old SHSAT score before preparing for college entrance tests. It belongs to a different assessment and admission process.
Transfer the Skills, Not a Score Prediction
There is no valid shortcut in which an SHSAT score becomes an ACT score. The tests measure different content at different stages and use different scales.
A strong SHSAT result may suggest useful prior experience with demanding schoolwork. It does not guarantee an ACT result. A disappointing SHSAT experience likewise does not set a ceiling on what you can learn during high school.
Use a current ACT diagnostic when you need a baseline. Our ACT score calculator supports the official forms named in the tool; it does not accept SHSAT results or convert them into ACT predictions.
Reading: Keep the Evidence Habit
One valuable transfer is the habit of supporting an answer with the text. On ACT Reading, a plausible statement is not enough if the passage does not justify it.
Try this original example:
A historian praises the archive's detailed ship records but notes that records from smaller ports were rarely preserved.
A supported interpretation is that the archive is useful but incomplete in a particular way. “The archive contains no reliable information” goes too far. “The archive fully represents all maritime activity” ignores the limitation.
When reviewing a question, name the exact distortion in a wrong answer: too broad, reversed relationship, unsupported motive, or a detail confused with the main point.
What you may need to adjust is passage management across the ACT's question sets. Practice keeping track of where information appears, comparing paired passages, and distinguishing a writer's view from the view of someone quoted.
English: Treat Editing as a Broader Task
Your earlier revising and editing practice can help with ACT English. Continue identifying complete sentences, agreement, and logical connections.
But do not reduce the section to punctuation. Questions can ask whether information belongs, where a sentence should go, how a transition connects ideas, or whether a revision meets a stated purpose. Consider this original pair of sentences:
The museum extended its opening hours. Evening attendance increased during the following month.
A transition emphasizing a result may fit if the surrounding passage supports that relationship. A transition emphasizing contrast would require a different connection. Read beyond the underlined words before choosing.
In practice, explain both grammar and meaning. A grammatically correct revision can still fail the question's purpose.
Math: Check What High School Added
Ratios, equations, geometry, and careful reading remain useful. The ACT also draws on high-school material that may have been unfamiliar when you prepared for the SHSAT.
Make a coursework inventory. Which algebra, functions, geometry, statistics, and trigonometry ideas have you learned? Which are uncertain? Which have not yet appeared in class?
Here is an original example connecting a familiar equation skill to function notation:
If f(x) = 3x − 2, what value of x makes f(x) = 19?
The notation says that the output is 19, so solve 3x − 2 = 19. Add 2 and divide by 3 to get x = 7. Check: f(7) = 21 − 2 = 19.
The algebra is familiar; the notation changes how the relationship is presented. Other topics may require genuinely new instruction. Distinguish the two so you do not spend equal time on every item in a content list.
Learn Calculator Use as a Separate Skill
ACT permits qualifying calculators during Math, with restrictions on devices and functions. Calculators are not permitted during Science. Consult the current policy for your exact model and testing format. ACT calculator policy
If your earlier preparation emphasized mental and written arithmetic, keep that ability while learning when a calculator is useful. Estimation can check whether a displayed result makes sense.
For example, if a calculation about a short classroom distance returns several million meters, inspect units and input before trusting the screen. A calculator carries out the expression entered; it does not verify the story's model.
Practice with the tool you expect to use. Learning a new device during the final week adds an avoidable task.
Replace Familiar Timing With ACT Timing
The enhanced ACT core has separate English, Math, and Reading sections with standard times of 35, 50, and 40 minutes. Science and Writing, if included, each have their own 40-minute section. Current ACT structure
You cannot treat that as one pool of time to distribute however you prefer. Practice finishing work within the applicable section and learning the actual review and navigation options.
The enhanced ACT is not adaptive, so do not interpret the apparent difficulty of the next question as a signal about your score. Follow the task in front of you and use the permitted navigation deliberately. ACT design framework, page 12
Give Science and Writing Their Own Decision
Science and Writing are separate from the enhanced English–Math–Reading Composite. Whether you take them depends on your testing arrangement and the requirements relevant to your plans.
For Science, practice reading figures, comparing experiments, and evaluating explanations. General science knowledge can help, but the work is not simply a recall quiz.
For Writing, practice developing and supporting an argument within the assigned task. Strong multiple-choice English performance does not automatically demonstrate essay planning.
Check your actual registration and school arrangement rather than assuming every student chooses the same options.
Start With a Four-Week Transition
Use Week 1 to learn the format and complete baseline work. In Week 2, address one unfamiliar content area. In Week 3, practice a section-specific strategy such as evidence comparison or English organization. In Week 4, complete fresh timed work and review the results.
Adjust the plan to your coursework and available time. Use current official ACT practice rather than relying on an old sibling's timing chart.
Your SHSAT preparation is part of your learning history. Bring the useful habits with you, allow new coursework to expand them, and let current ACT evidence determine what you study next.
