The standard digital SAT delivers 98 questions: 54 in Reading and Writing and 44 in Math. Those delivered totals include questions used to develop and evaluate the test rather than calculate your score.
Each module includes two unscored pretest questions. Across the four modules, that means eight pretest questions: four in Reading and Writing and four in Math. You are not told which questions they are, so you should approach every question as meaningful work.
Delivered questions versus scored questions
The SAT structure guide lists the delivered counts. College Board’s scoring explanation identifies the two pretest questions in each module.
Putting those pieces together gives this standard digital SAT breakdown:

“Operational” is the technical label for questions used in scoring. It does not mean that each correct operational response has an identical, fixed scaled-point value. The digital scoring model needs more information than a count.
Do not use this table for a different assessment or a nonadaptive paper practice form. PSAT products and paper practice materials can have different counts.
Why include questions that do not affect the score?
Test developers need information about how potential questions behave before using them operationally. A question that looks clear to its writer may work differently when students encounter it in a real testing setting.
Pretesting helps the developer evaluate items within the testing process. From your perspective, however, there is no special task attached to a pretest item. It appears among the other questions, and you are expected to work on it normally.
You do not need to learn how item development works in order to prepare effectively. The practical consequence is that you cannot identify all the scoring information from your memory of the test.
Can you recognize an unscored question?
No dependable student-facing method identifies them. A question is not necessarily unscored because it looks unusual, feels very difficult, or uses an unfamiliar topic.
Those guesses can create a costly habit: deciding that a challenging item probably does not matter. You have no basis for that decision. The item could be operational, and the time spent trying to classify it could have been used on the task.
A better rule is to decide how to handle a question based on your progress. If you understand the method, continue. If you are stuck and another attempt is not helping, use the review tools and move on when appropriate. Pretest speculation should not enter the decision.
Why the distinction matters for practice records
A student might write, “I got 45 Reading and Writing questions right,” without recording what those 45 answers came from. That number could describe an official digital practice test, a collection of unrelated drills, or a paper practice form.
Those are different measurements. Even within a delivered total, the number does not necessarily identify which responses were operational. And for the digital SAT, an operational raw count still does not recreate the full scoring model.
Record the source alongside every result:
- Assessment and exact practice form.
- Digital or nonadaptive paper delivery.
- Whether the count covers all delivered questions.
- Whether timing and other conditions matched the intended test.
- Whether the result came from an official scoring report.
This takes less than a minute and prevents a confusing comparison later.
An original count example
Imagine two students each count 42 correct answers across a 54-question Reading and Writing section. One correctly answered more pretest questions than the other.
Their delivered correct totals match, but those totals do not establish identical operational performance. Even knowing operational totals would not justify assigning a scaled score from a homemade percentage formula.
The right conclusion is limited: both counted the same number of correct responses in the set they reviewed. Anything beyond that requires the appropriate official scoring information.
Why a paper SAT table is different
The nonadaptive paper SAT Practice Test 6 used by our tool contains 66 Reading and Writing questions and 54 Math questions. Its official scoring worksheet supplies ranges for that particular practice form. Those are not the digital SAT’s 54-and-44 totals.

Entering a digital total into a paper table does not make the table more relevant. It changes the question you are calculating without correcting the mismatch. Always identify the form before entering numbers.
What to do with wrong answers
You should review every available practice question you missed, including questions whose role in an official form is not clear to you. A mistake can reveal a useful learning need regardless of whether that particular item contributed to a practice score.
During review, identify the task precisely. Was it an inference, a sentence-boundary decision, a linear equation, or an interpretation of data? Then explain what caused the error.
For example, “I forgot to apply the percentage change to the original amount” suggests a concrete exercise. “That was probably an experimental question” gives you no preparation benefit.
You can also review a correct answer you guessed. The goal of practice is to improve your reasoning, not merely preserve a favorable tally.
Keep the numbers in their proper role
Question counts tell you the size and structure of the work. They help you schedule a full practice session and understand the pace of a module. They do not tell you exactly how many points any remembered mistake cost.
Use an official Bluebook practice result when you need a scored digital diagnostic. Use the question-level review to choose your next lesson or practice set. Keeping those two purposes separate makes both the score and the practice more useful.
