The digital SAT does not use a universal table that converts “questions correct” into a 400–1600 score. College Board calculates scores using your responses and characteristics of the questions you receive. A raw total leaves out information that the scoring process needs.
That means two students cannot reliably predict matching scores just because they remember missing the same number of questions. It also means a calculator that asks only for correct answers and a guessed module difficulty should not present a precise digital SAT score as if it were official.
Begin with the score you actually receive
Your SAT total combines a Reading and Writing score and a Math score. Each section uses a 200–800 scale; the total runs from 400 to 1600. Those are scaled results, not percentages. College Board explains the reporting scale in its score guide.
A hypothetical 640 in Math does not mean 80% of Math questions were correct. Dividing 640 by 800 treats the top of a reporting scale as if it were the number of available raw points. It is the wrong denominator for that question.
Keep three measurements separate:

All three can be useful. Confusing them makes study decisions less reliable.
Why adaptive testing matters
Each section has two modules. Performance in the first influences the mix of questions in the second, and responses from both contribute to the section result. The second module is not a separate exam that replaces the first.
College Board's scoring explanation describes an item response theory model that uses response patterns and question characteristics. It also explains that modules contain unscored pretest questions. A student counting remembered mistakes does not know all the inputs needed to reconstruct the result.
You do not need to learn the statistical model to prepare well. The practical consequence is enough: answer each question as accurately as you can, and do not treat the test as a fixed pile of identical points.
A raw-count example that shows the limitation
Imagine two original practice sets, each containing ten math questions. One set covers straightforward linear equations. The other includes several challenging problems involving nonlinear relationships.
Two students each answer eight correctly. The shared “8 out of 10” is useful for describing their accuracy on those sets. It does not establish equal mastery of all SAT Math content, and it certainly does not establish a shared SAT section score.
The same caution applies within adaptive testing, where students may receive different questions. A bare count has stripped away the context. Adding a label such as “hard module” does not restore the full response pattern or the scoring model.
This example is not a claim that a difficult question is always worth a particular number of extra points. It explains why a generic arithmetic conversion lacks the necessary information.
Is every wrong answer a fixed score deduction?
Do not budget mistakes as “I can miss four because each one costs ten points.” That assumes a fixed penalty table which you do not have.
The useful question after an error is what caused it. Did you misread a condition? Choose the wrong relationship? Run out of time? Lack a grammar rule? Those causes tell you what to study. A guessed point value does not.
An error log might look like this:

The log remains useful even when no scaled score is available.
Does the harder second module guarantee a high score?
No. Your impression of module difficulty is not an official score report. A question can feel hard because it targets an unfamiliar skill, uses dense wording, or appears when you are tired.
College Board explains that a range of scores is possible through either second-module route. Do not convert an emotional reaction into a precise score ceiling or floor. Keep working on the questions in front of you instead of deciding that the result has already been settled.
A particularly costly habit is to stop trying because the second module “felt too easy.” Another is to rush because receiving difficult material feels like proof of success. Both replace actual problem solving with an uncertain interpretation of the route.
How to use the SAT calculator accurately

For digital SAT practice, enter counts to understand accuracy. The tool does not claim that raw counts determine an official scaled score. Use an official Bluebook practice result when you need a reported digital practice score.
For the specific nonadaptive paper SAT Practice Test 6, the tool uses that test's published conversion ranges. The paper form has 66 Reading and Writing questions and 54 Math questions, as documented in its official scoring guide. Those counts and tables do not describe the standard digital test.
Before using any calculator, ask: Which test form is this for? What information does it require? Is the output an accuracy percentage, a range from a named scoring guide, or an unsupported estimate?
What official practice scores can tell you
An official practice score gives you a more appropriate reference than a homemade raw conversion. It still describes a particular performance under particular conditions.
Record the test name, date, section results, and whether you followed normal timing. Also record whether you had seen the questions before. A repeated test may be useful for checking understanding, but familiarity makes it a different kind of evidence from a fresh timed attempt.
When comparing practice sessions, look for patterns across multiple observations. One result can suggest a weakness; repeated errors on the same skill make the next study task clearer.
Turn score questions into study questions
Instead of asking “How many can I miss for my target?” ask:
- Which skills am I consistently answering correctly?
- Where do I lose accuracy when time is limited?
- Which wrong answers came from avoidable process errors?
- Can I solve a new example of the skill I just reviewed?
- Does my next official practice result support the improvement I expected?
These questions keep score goals connected to actions you control. You can still have a target score. You simply avoid pretending that a private raw-count formula tells you exactly how to reach it.
