A good SAT score is one that serves your college and scholarship plans. There is no single score that is “good” for every applicant, institution, program, and application year. Start with the colleges you are considering, check their current testing policies, and use their published score information as context, not as an admission guarantee.
College Board makes the same broad distinction in its guide to good scores: a score belongs within a larger application. Your practical job is to turn that general idea into a specific, manageable target.
Start with three different questions
Students often combine these questions even though they need different evidence:
- How does my score compare with other test takers? Use a clearly labeled College Board percentile table.
- How does it compare with a college's reported students? Use the institution's current admissions data and identify the group described.
- Should I spend more time preparing? Consider your gap, deadlines, other responsibilities, and the likely value of further testing.
A score can be strong nationally while sitting below a particular college's published range. Another score can be well matched to your list without reaching a headline number classmates discuss.
Neither comparison tells you that you are guaranteed admission or automatically excluded. The point is to make a better decision, not to assign yourself a label.
Build a college-by-college worksheet
Use the official admissions site for each institution. Record the date you checked it. If the website links a current class profile or Common Data Set, note exactly which entering class it describes.

Do not fill an empty cell with a guess. “Not yet confirmed” is more useful than a policy copied from an undated discussion board.
Read the middle 50% correctly
If a college reports a middle 50% SAT range, the lower boundary usually describes the 25th percentile and the upper boundary the 75th percentile of the stated population. It is not the minimum and maximum score admitted.
Consider this entirely hypothetical example:

These are teaching examples, not real college statistics. They illustrate why a single “good score” cutoff cannot replace reading your list.
Even at College A, being within the range does not assign an admission probability. The rest of the application and the institution's selection process still matter. At College B, being below the range does not by itself establish that applying is pointless.
Check the population behind the number
A range based on enrolled students who submitted scores is not a range for every applicant. That distinction becomes especially important when submission is optional.
Suppose a class profile includes 600 enrolled students, but the SAT statistics cover only the subset who submitted SAT scores. You cannot assume that all 600 had scores in the displayed range. You also cannot infer what the nonsubmitting students would have scored.
This is why a worksheet should include both the label and the statistic. “1280–1440, enrolled score submitters, fall entering class” preserves information. Writing only “college average 1360” may discard both the actual statistic and its limits.
If two official pages disagree, check their class years and definitions before deciding one is wrong. Different populations often explain the difference.
Turn the research into a target
Choose a working goal that connects to your list and can guide preparation. You may use a range instead of a single number.
For example, a hypothetical student with a 1210 baseline might choose an initial 1280–1320 working range because that would improve the fit with several colleges on the student's list. This is a planning example, not a prediction that a particular number of study hours will produce the increase.
Then look at sections. If the baseline is Reading and Writing 650 and Math 560, the first review should investigate Math errors. That does not mean ignoring Reading and Writing; it means assigning time based on evidence.
A target should answer, “What result would materially help my plan?” It should not simply be the highest round number that feels impressive.
Do not confuse a target with a guarantee
Three statements sound similar but are not equivalent:
- “This is the result I am preparing toward.”
- “This is the result I expect with certainty.”
- “This result guarantees admission.”
Only the first is a responsible description of a personal goal. Practice scores fluctuate, preparation time varies, and admissions decisions involve information beyond testing.
Keep a second measure of progress alongside the score: specific skills demonstrated on unfamiliar questions. If you can now solve systems accurately or distinguish a complete sentence from a dependent clause, that is useful progress even before the next reported practice result.
Decide whether another test deserves the time
Before registering again, ask what you would do differently. A retake with no review plan may simply repeat the same weaknesses.
Consider the full cost: registration, transportation, study time, and attention taken from coursework or applications. Those costs do not mean retesting is wrong. They mean the decision should have a reason.
A focused retake plan might identify two recurring weaknesses, reserve time to practice them, and set a checkpoint before the next date. If the plan consists only of “try harder,” make it more concrete before adding another deadline.
Do not change an entire college list because of one disappointing practice test. Review the conditions and skill evidence first.
Use practice measurements for the right purpose
An official Bluebook practice score can help you compare your current performance with a working goal. A short practice set is better used to investigate a skill.
The SAT score calculator can organize digital accuracy, but raw correct counts do not yield a reliable digital SAT scaled score. Its paper Practice Test 6 ranges belong only to that named nonadaptive form.
If you are evaluating a 1300 target, use an appropriate official score report rather than declaring that a chosen percentage correct “equals 1300.” Keep your target and your measurement method aligned.
Revisit the target when your list changes
A college list often changes as you learn about programs, affordability, and location. Your testing plan can change with it.
Set a review date to recheck institutional policies and update your worksheet. Keep the old source dates so you can see what changed. A thoughtful target is useful because it supports decisions; it does not have to remain fixed simply because you wrote it down first.
