Three-Month SAT Study Plan: A Week-by-Week Schedule

Use a flexible twelve-week SAT schedule with prerequisite work, targeted practice, mixed review, diagnostic checkpoints, and realistic recovery weeks.

A three-month SAT plan should change as you learn. Use the first weeks to identify and repair gaps, the middle weeks to apply skills across unfamiliar questions, and the final weeks to rehearse the full testing routine. Keep checkpoints far enough apart that there is time to learn something between them.

The schedule here is our original planning framework. It does not promise a particular score increase. College Board’s official practice resources can supply the practice materials while your own work determines which skills deserve attention.

Set the calendar before choosing question counts

Start with school, work, sports, family responsibilities, and major exams. Then choose a repeatable study pattern around those commitments.

An example week might contain three forty-five-minute learning sessions, one thirty-minute review session, and a weekend block when a longer assessment is planned. A full practice test replaces other work that week; it does not have to be piled on top of every normal session.

Identify at least one lighter week in advance. A schedule that assumes twelve identical weeks is likely to break during finals, travel, or a busy project.

Write down a tentative test date and verify registration and device requirements separately. A study plan is not a registration confirmation.

Weeks 1–2: Establish the starting point

Week 1: Take and review a baseline

Use a fresh current-format official practice test. Follow the timing and accommodations that apply to your preparation. Record interruptions and assistance so you can interpret the result honestly.

Review incorrect, guessed, and unusually slow answers. For each, locate the first decision that failed. Did you misunderstand a word, choose the wrong equation, miss a punctuation boundary, or continue a method that was no longer helping?

Choose two initial priorities and one maintenance skill. Avoid filling a notebook with twenty equally urgent weaknesses.

Week 2: Repair prerequisites

Work backward from the mistakes. If linear equations are difficult because fractions are unreliable, practice fractions within equations. If transitions are difficult because the passage’s ideas are unclear, practice summarizing the two ideas before studying transition vocabulary.

Use a small example, a worked solution, and a fresh variation. For instance, after learning to solve x/4 + 3 = 8, try x/5 − 2 = 6 and explain why the same sequence of operations applies.

End the week by retrying earlier errors without the solutions visible. That delayed attempt tells you more than immediate repetition.

Weeks 3–4: Develop reliable methods

Week 3: Practice recognition

Mix the current priorities with familiar material. Ask not only “Can I solve this?” but “How do I know which method to use?”

For reading, identify whether the task asks for a claim, an inference, a word’s meaning, or a rhetorical purpose. For math, name the requested quantity and the relationship connecting it to the data.

Track slow correct answers. A method can be accurate but unnecessarily long, and that is useful information for choosing a clearer approach.

Week 4: Run the first checkpoint

Take a fresh practice assessment if your calendar includes review time. Compare your methods with the baseline.

Keep an unchanged practice condition log: device, timing, breaks, interruptions, and whether you recognized questions. A repeated test can be a learning exercise, but familiarity makes it a weaker independent checkpoint.

Use the result to select the next two priorities. Do not simply continue the same chapter because the calendar says it is still “math month.”

Weeks 5–6: Expand coverage without abandoning review

Week 5: Add a new cluster

Choose a related group of skills. For example, linear equations, slopes, and systems can reinforce one another. Sentence boundaries, transitions, and punctuation around transitions can also be studied together while keeping their distinct decisions clear.

Spend part of each session on a previously repaired skill. Old work should become shorter and more independent, not disappear entirely.

Keep the number of active topics small enough that you can explain each one’s current goal.

Week 6: Use a recovery and consolidation week

A lighter week can catch up on unfinished review or accommodate school responsibilities. It is also a chance to examine whether the schedule itself is realistic.

If you consistently skip the longest session, shorten it or move it. If you complete practice but postpone review, schedule review first on a different day.

Do not call a topic mastered because its chapter is finished. Test it with an unfamiliar question and a short explanation. If the explanation depends on seeing the answer key, keep it in the active review list.

Weeks 7–8: Add timing and mixed decisions

Week 7: Observe time use

Use timed sets that contain varied skills. Record where you lose productive momentum: repeated rereading, unnecessary calculator entry, elaborate algebra, or excessive checking of an already sound answer.

Try one change at a time. For example, identify the requested expression before solving, or mark a question after one clearly unsuccessful approach. Changing five habits at once makes it difficult to know which one helped.

The goal is purposeful work within the available time, not identical time spent on every question.

Week 8: Take a second checkpoint

Use fresh official practice and review the complete result. Compare recurring error categories, confidence, and unanswered questions alongside scores.

If a section score rises but the same reasoning errors remain, continue addressing them. If a score is flat but previously unreliable skills are now consistent, inspect whether new weaknesses appeared elsewhere.

One total cannot explain the whole pattern. Write a short interpretation supported by actual questions before revising the schedule.

Weeks 9–10: Target the remaining bottleneck

Week 9: Choose the highest-value repair

At this point, prioritize a problem you can define clearly. Examples include losing signs during substitutions, confusing a passage’s claim with its evidence, or failing to reject answers that overstate a finding.

Create a compact set around that decision. Include easy and moderate examples, not only the hardest available questions. A sound method should work across difficulty levels.

If a concept remains unfamiliar after several attempts, ask a teacher, tutor, or knowledgeable peer for an explanation focused on the exact step you cannot justify.

Week 10: Rehearse the full workflow

Practice on the device and with the permitted tools you intend to use. Include logging in, reading instructions, managing the timer, marking questions, and checking responses.

Review calculator choices as part of mathematical reasoning. If a graph is helpful, explain which coordinate answers the question. If hand algebra is clearer, do not force the problem into a graph.

A full rehearsal should reveal practical issues early enough to solve them.

Weeks 11–12: Consolidate and taper

Week 11: Final meaningful assessment

If another fresh test will inform a specific decision and you can review it, take it early enough to act on the result. If your recent work already provides clear evidence, another full test may be less useful than targeted repair.

Write a short final priority list. Limit it to patterns you can realistically reinforce.

Week 12: Protect readiness

Complete current official setup tasks, verify logistics, and use light review to reinforce familiar procedures. Avoid introducing a large collection of new strategies immediately before the test.

Keep ordinary responsibilities and rest in view. The purpose of the final week is to arrive prepared to use what you have practiced, not to prove how many hours you can study.

Use this table as an overview, not a requirement to finish every topic in a particular week.

Adapt for different starting points

A student who has not learned several tested math concepts may need more time in prerequisite work. A student with strong untimed accuracy may need more mixed practice and decision review. A student with inconsistent attendance may need a simpler schedule before adding difficulty.

Do not use another student’s starting score as a complete guide to your own allocation. Two similar totals can reflect very different section profiles.

Make the plan easy to restart

At the end of every session, leave one instruction for the next: “Retry the system with fractions,” or “Explain why the comparison answer overstates the passage.”

That instruction reduces the effort of starting again after a busy day. It also makes a missed session easier to recover because the next task remains visible.
