Can You Go Back on the Digital SAT? Navigation, Review, and Guessing

Learn when the digital SAT lets you return to questions, how to use Bluebook review tools, and how to make thoughtful guessing and time-management decisions.

Yes: you can go back to questions within the current digital SAT module while its time remains. You can review an answer, change it, or return to a skipped question. Once the module ends, you cannot reopen it from the next module.

That boundary should shape your practice. A strategy built around returning to any question at the end of the entire test will not work. Neither will a rule that says you must get every item perfect before moving forward.

Where review is possible

College Board describes within-module navigation in its digital SAT scoring and structure guidance. Bluebook’s testing tools include a question menu and a mark-for-review feature.

The rule applies to the module, not just the broad subject. Both Reading and Writing and Math contain a transition you must respect.

Learn the difference between marking and answering

Marking a question is a reminder. It is not a substitute for selecting or entering an answer.

A useful rehearsal is to create three different situations in a test preview: an answered question, an unanswered question, and an answered question you marked for review. Open the question menu and inspect how those states appear.

That rehearsal prevents a common last-minute confusion. You do not want to assume that a marker means you submitted an answer when the response is still blank.

When reviewing, check unanswered questions deliberately. Then use remaining time on marked answers where another look has a clear purpose.

Give a marked question a reason

Marking half the module “just in case” creates a long queue without priorities. You will return to questions and have to remember why each one bothered you.

Instead, use a specific reason:

  • I understood the task but need to check arithmetic.
  • I narrowed the choices to two and need to compare a particular phrase.
  • I know the relevant concept but my first method stalled.
  • I entered an answer and want to verify the required form.
  • I have not yet made a meaningful attempt.

If you use scratch paper, a brief question number and a short note can be enough. Do not build an elaborate notation system that takes longer than the question.

When should you move on?

Move on when the next minute is unlikely to produce better reasoning than the next question deserves. That is a judgment to rehearse, not a universal stopwatch rule.

Consider an original Math example. You need the value of a variable in two linear equations. You begin substitution, notice you have copied one sign incorrectly, and know exactly how to fix it. Continuing is reasonable.

Now consider a different situation. You have rewritten the same equation three times without deciding what to solve for. Another restart may not help. Marking the item and addressing questions where you have a method can be a better use of time.

The same distinction applies in Reading and Writing. A targeted reread of one sentence can help. Repeatedly reading an entire passage because two answer choices “both sound right” may simply repeat the same uncertainty.

Review decisions need evidence

Do not change an answer only because a choice now feels too obvious. Change it when you can identify a concrete reason: a word you missed, a calculation error, or a rule the first choice violates.

For a reading question, ask which exact phrase supports the choice. For a punctuation question, identify the independent clauses and the function of the punctuation. For Math, substitute the result or check whether it satisfies the original conditions.

A review pass should improve the reasoning, not invite fresh guessing about your first instincts.

A short worked example

Suppose an original problem asks for the cost of three tickets, and you solve correctly for the price of one ticket. You selected that one-ticket price.

During review, rereading the requested quantity gives you a specific reason to change the answer. This is productive checking.

By contrast, changing a valid solution because you have not selected answer C recently has no mathematical basis. Answer-choice patterns are not evidence.

Guessing: use the official guidance carefully

College Board explains that, for most students making an honest effort, guessing is better than leaving an answer blank, especially after eliminating options. Its scoring guidance does not support gaming the test through a fixed guessing pattern. Read the official explanation.

For a multiple-choice question, eliminate choices only for a reason you can state. Then select the best-supported remaining option. On a student-produced Math response, there is no answer-choice list to exploit; use any valid reasoning or estimate the problem allows.

Do not spend the end of a module calculating what a particular guess might do to your scaled score. You cannot know that from the available information.

A practical end-of-module routine

Use practice to develop a brief routine you can repeat:

  1. Check unanswered items. Distinguish unanswered from merely marked.
  2. Finish plausible attempts. Prioritize questions where a specific correction or final step remains.
  3. Check response form. Confirm that the selected or entered answer matches what was requested.
  4. Review targeted doubts. Revisit a passage phrase or computation rather than restarting everything.
  5. Leave the ended module behind. Begin the next task with your attention available.

This order is a practice suggestion. Adjust it if your own review shows a better way to use time.

Rehearse navigation before a scored diagnostic

A full practice score is less useful if a large part of the session was spent learning the interface. Begin with a short Bluebook test preview, then take a full official practice test when the basic actions feel familiar.

Record which questions you marked and whether the second look helped. Over several sessions, you may discover that you mark correctly solved questions out of habit, or that you wait too long to leave stalled problems. Either observation gives you a focused change to try.

You do not need a flawless first pass. You need a reliable way to answer, move, return, and check within the time the current module gives you.
