Passage

The Last Summer Festival

The annual summer festival had always been the highlight of our
small town, but this year felt different. As I walked through the
familiar rows of game booths and food stands, a bittersweet
melancholy settled over me like evening mist. The same cheerful
5
volunteers ran the same activities they had organized for
decades, yet everything seemed touched by an inevitable sadness.
Mrs. Henderson still operated the ring toss game with her
characteristic enthusiasm, calling out encouragement to children
who missed their targets. Her voice carried the same warmth it
10
had when I was seven years old, trying desperately to win a
stuffed elephant. But now I noticed the slight tremor in her
hands and the way she paused to catch her breath between
customers.
The carousel played its familiar melody, an old-fashioned waltz
15
that had accompanied countless childhood memories. Parents lifted
their toddlers onto painted horses while older children chose
their favorites based on colors and expressions. I remembered the
thrill of that circular journey, the feeling that each ride might
carry me somewhere magical. Now the music sounded hauntingly
20
beautiful, like a lullaby for dreams that would soon end.
Tomorrow, the demolition crews would arrive to clear this land
for a shopping center. Progress, they called it. Economic
development. More jobs and tax revenue for our growing community.
The pragmatic part of me understood the necessity, but my heart
25
mourned the loss of something irreplaceable.
I bought a cup of fresh lemonade from the church booth and found
a quiet spot on the hill overlooking the festival grounds. The
golden hour light painted everything in warm amber tones, and
laughter drifted up from the crowds below. This moment would
30
become a photograph in my memory, preserved forever exactly as it
was on this last, perfect evening.
