Passage

The New Student

Marcus clutched his schedule tighter as he navigated the crowded
hallway of Lincoln Middle School. Three weeks into the semester,
everyone already had their groups, their inside jokes, their
assigned lunch tables. He was the outsider looking in through
5
windows that seemed permanently fogged.
"Watch it, newbie!" A boy with a Lakers jersey bumped past him,
sending Marcus's books tumbling. Several students laughed, but
one girl with paint-stained fingers immediately knelt to help
gather his scattered papers.
10
"Don't mind Tyler," she said, handing him his science notebook.
"He thinks being loud makes him important." Her voice carried a
quiet confidence that surprised Marcus. "I'm Zoe."
"Marcus," he replied, grateful but still embarrassed. "Thanks."
"Art class?" Zoe noticed his elective schedule. "Mrs. Peterson is
15
amazing. She actually lets us create instead of just copying from
textbooks." As they walked, Marcus noticed how other students
seemed to gravitate toward Zoe—not because she demanded
attention, but because she radiated genuine kindness.
In art class, Marcus found himself seated next to Tyler, who
20
immediately began complaining about the clay project. "This is so
stupid. My dad says art won't pay the bills."
Marcus watched as Tyler roughly shaped his clay, clearly
frustrated. When Tyler's piece collapsed for the third time,
Marcus quietly offered, "Maybe try building from the center out?
25
I used to do pottery with my grandmother."
Tyler looked skeptical but followed the advice. When his bowl
finally held its shape, his entire demeanor shifted. "That
actually worked," he admitted grudgingly.
Later, as Marcus packed up, Tyler approached him hesitantly.
30
"Hey, sorry about earlier. In the hall." He shuffled his feet. "I
was having a bad morning. My parents... anyway, thanks for the
pottery tip."
Marcus nodded, understanding more than Tyler knew. Moving to a
new city after his parents' divorce had taught him that sometimes
35
people's worst behavior came from their own pain. "Tomorrow's a
fresh start," he offered.
As he walked to his bus, Marcus realized something had changed.
The windows no longer seemed fogged. Maybe he was finally
learning to see clearly—not just the school around him, but the
40
people in it. Even Tyler, beneath his defensive exterior, was
just another kid trying to figure things out. And Zoe had shown
him that kindness, not popularity, was the real currency that
mattered.
The next morning, Marcus walked into school with his head up,
45
ready to discover what other surprises awaited behind those
once-mysterious windows.
